　王子チャールズ２世とルパート王子が船を連ねて航海し、
海賊を退治したという話。
ピューリタン革命で失権した二人は、
王政復古で復権するまで逃亡生活を続けたが、
その中での冒険活劇という仕立にしてある。

【歌の背景】

ピューリタン革命（清教徒革命）
　イギリスの市民革命（１６４２〜６０）。スチュアート家のチャールズ１世と
議会の対立が、１６４０年長期議会の召集後激化し、４２年国王派と議会派との
間に内乱がはじまる。最初はルパート王子率いる国王軍が有利で、各地で勝利し
たが、議会派はクロムウェルの率いる鉄騎隊の活躍で国王軍を破り、４６年第一
次内乱終了。チャールズ２世は、ルパート王子とともに逃亡生活を続けた。議会
派は長老派と独立派に分裂し、独立派は長老派を追放、４９年国王を処刑して共
和制を宣言。クロムウェルの軍事独裁体制がしかれたが、その死後、６０年に王
政復古が行われた。(チャールズ２世が即位）

チャールズ１世（１６００〜４９）
　スチュアート朝の王（在位１６２５〜４９年）。ジェームズ一世の子。王権神
授説を奉じて専制政治を敷く。スコットランド失政からピューリタン革命をひき
おこし、４９年に処刑された。

チャールズ２世（１６３０〜８５）
　スチュアート朝の王（在位１６６０〜８５年）。チャールズ一世の子。ピュー
リタン革命中はフランスに亡命。王政復古後即位し、スチュアート朝を復活。議
会をおさえようとしたが、審査律・人身保護令により王権は制限された。

ルパート王子（１６１９〜１６８２）
　チャールズ１世の甥。清教徒革命時の王党派の将軍、提督。クロムウェルに敗
れ、西インド諸島などに逃亡生活を送った。王制復古後は帰国し海軍卿を務めた。
陸軍・海軍両方で優秀な軍人だったが、商業（新大陸でのビーバーの毛皮の取引）
でも才能を発揮し、カナダ北部に「ルパートランド」と呼ばれる、一大商圏を築
いた。その広さは、北は北極圏から南は五大湖まで、現在のカナダの４０％を占
めていた。

クロムウェル（１５９９〜１６５８）
　イギリスの軍人、政治家。１６４２年清教徒革命勃発後、騎兵隊、新模範軍を
組織して、王党軍を撃破。四九年チャールズ一世を処刑し、共和制を樹立。５１
年航海条例を発して、蘭英戦争を誘発。５３年護国卿（護民官）となり、厳しい
清教主義によって独裁政治を断行
